Site: Newbridge Memo
Built in 1926 and affectionately known throughout the South Wales Valleys as "Newbridge Memo" it was the prime social focus in the area and boasted a magnificent 700 seat "Art Deco" cinema with many striking architectural features. It also housed a large dance hall where many famous bands had played throughout the 1950s, 60s and 80's. The Memo became a "Jewel" in an otherwise bleak industrial landscape.
In the spring of 2003 a group of local people decided that they were not going
to let the Institute die and set about rallying the support of the local
community to keep the "Stute & Memo" open until funding could be found to save the buildings.
Successful campaigning tool for BBC Restoration
This website has helped the friends of the Newbridge Memo to secure enough public votes to be Wales' representative in the final of BBC Television series RESTORATION. The web site is vital as a campaigning tool - with reciprocal links to important local sites such as the BBC, South Wales Argus and Best of Wales.
